Teatro alla Scala: The Nutcracker

Tuesday, 22 March 2016

After last season’s sold-out performance, Nacho Duato’s The Nutcracker returns, uniting respect for tradition with the choreographer’s modern vision. The music is by Tchaikovsky, multi-faceted, versatile and rich in colour; there is the fairytale, the marionettes, the gifts, the Christmas tree, Clara and her nutcracker, which turns into a handsome Prince. And there is the vision of Nacho Duato, who sets the story at the beginning of last century, inspired by the elegance of that period: no nineteenth-century wigs or crinolines, but long silk gowns instead, which allow greater freedom and inventiveness in the choreography. Elegant costumes and picturesque scenery, minimalist and evocative, as in the artistic intention of Nacho Duato, restrained, fresh, concentrated, ready to encounter the inheritance of the past and astonish again for the inspiration it can offer.
